THE PROCESS

How It Works

Connect your accounts, confirm your schedule, and Centinel monitors your 60-day forecast daily.
Connect

Step 1: Connect Accounts

Checking: Link your bank in ~30 seconds via Plaid. Centinel pulls your balance and identifies your recurring income and expenses.

Credit Cards: Link your cards to dynamically track card payments in your forecast.

Confirm

Step 2: Confirm & Complete

Review: Confirm the recurring income and bills we found. Edit anything that’s off.

Complete: Add anything missing so your forecast is more accurate from day one, and set your Floor (the minimum balance you want to stay above).

Daily monitoring

Step 3: Daily Monitoring

Refresh: Each day, Centinel automatically pulls your latest account balance and updated credit card info and refreshes your 60-day forecast.

Headline: We surface the headline right away—either what's projected as available, or the amount and date tied to a projected dip below your Floor or $0.

Explore and control

Step 4: Explore & Control

View it your way: Flow (big picture), Calendar (day-by-day), or Ledger (full list).

Understand what's happening: Tap any day to see what hits—and how it affects your balance.

Refine: Life doesn't always follow a schedule. Edit a paycheck, move a bill, or add a one-time expense. Centinel recalculates instantly.

Smart Credit Card Tracking

Most apps miss one of the biggest variables in your cash flow: your credit cards.

Connect your credit card once. Set your payment preference (statement balance, minimum payment, or a custom amount)—and change it anytime. Whenever your statement updates, Centinel refreshes your forecast to keep it current.

Your Floor: Set Your Minimum Balance.

Set your Floor—the minimum balance you're comfortable with. Centinel flags days you’re projected to dip below it, so you can plan ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to connect my bank?

Yes. Centinel uses Plaid to connect to your bank—the same technology trusted by Venmo, Robinhood, Coinbase, and millions of users. Here's how Plaid keeps you safe:

  • Encryption: Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest.
  • Read-only access: Centinel can only read your account data—we can't move money or make changes.
  • Secure credential handling: Centinel never sees or stores your bank login credentials.

How is Centinel different from a budgeting app? Should I use both?
Budgeting apps track your spending behavior—swipe your credit card today, it's logged today. Great for understanding spending habits, but they don't forecast when bills actually hit your checking account.

Centinel uses your cash flow to track when money hits or leaves your checking account. It runs a 60-day forecast that shows your projected available cash and flags upcoming shortfalls before they happen.

Yes, use both! Use a budgeting app to stay on top of spending habits. Use Centinel to minimize idle cash and spend with more confidence—without dipping below your Floor or risking an overdraft. They solve different problems.
How does Centinel's forecasting work?
Centinel forecasts your checking account balance by simulating your future cash flow day by day. It takes your current balance, then automatically applies each scheduled expense and income on the date it’s expected to occur.

The result is a running 60-day projection of your balance that shows your projected available cash and flags if you’re projected to dip below $0 or your Floor—so you see issues early, not after the fact.
My cash flow changes relatively frequently. How does Centinel handle this?
Centinel is built for real life—where paychecks change, bills shift, and plans aren’t always predictable. Adjust a single paycheck, edit your recurring income, or add one-time expenses anytime. Centinel instantly updates your forecast so it stays current.
What if multiple transactions happen on the same day?
Banks don’t always process same-day transactions in a predictable order. When money comes in and goes out on the same day, Centinel uses a conservative timing assumption, assuming debits post before credits. This helps keep your projected available cash from being overly optimistic, and it can surface intraday overdraft risk when timing could matter. Forecasts update as transactions clear and can change.
Can Centinel guarantee I’ll never overdraft?
No app can guarantee you’ll never overdraft—and Centinel won’t pretend to.

Overdrafts can still happen when unexpected transactions hit or when you ignore alerts. Centinel can’t see or control every real-world decision or unexpected transaction, but it can forecast your balance and flag risks ahead of time based on what it knows. Outcomes depend on data provided and user action. Think of Centinel as a tool, but you’re still the one in control of your money.
